Less than a day after launching its own gin, Buckingham Palace’s bar has run dry. The spirit, made from botanicals from the gardens of the famous royal home, has sold out in hours.
The Buckingham Palace gin was launched on July 13th 2020, retailing at £40 for a 70cl bottle. It is being sold by the Royal Collection Trust. However, by the morning of July 14th, would be buyers were told that online stocks needed to be replenished. Customers can register to be emailed when the gin is back on sale.
A spokesperson for the Trust told the News Shopper site that they were ”delighted” with the customer reaction to the gin.
The gin has been created using cuttings from the Buckingham Palace garden while creators have also used the botanicals in the grounds as inspiration for the full flavour of the gin. According to the Trust website, the small batch gin contains ”lemon, verbena, hawthorn berries and mulberry leaves” from the gardens which contribute to a spirit that produces ”citrus and herbal notes.”
All the profits from the sale of the gin go to the Royal Collection Trust which is a registered charity set up by the Queen to preserve and look after the Royal Collection. The Trust also oversees the opening of official residences including Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
The Trust is predicting a shortfall of around £30 million in revenue over the coming year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Windsor Castle will open to the public again from July 23rd 2020, with safety measures and social distancing in place, but there will be no summer exhibitions at Buckingham Palace this year.
The gin will also be on sale in the gift shop at Windsor as well as other properties including Holyroodhouse which also welcomes visitors back on July 23rd. As well as public sales, the gin will be served at Buckingham Palace when receptions can resume.
The Queen is known to enjoy a gin every now and again. However, Her Majesty is said to mix hers with Dubonnet while the Trust website recommends serving the Buckingham Palace batch with tonic water, lemon and ice.
