Crown Princess Mary will deliver a speech at the World Health Organisation Regional Committee for Europe’s annual meeting next week.
Crown Princess Mary has spoken at the WHO/Europe’s annual meeting nine times over the previous years and currently serves as its Patron, a position she’s held since 2005.
According to the World Health Organisation’s website, “important topics on the agenda include reviewing the progress and lessons learned from the Health 2020 policy framework, discussions on advancing health equity, improving health literacy and using organisational and technological innovation to strengthen primary health care.”
The WHO/Europe meetings will take place in Copenhagen from 16 to 19 September, at UN City. Attendees include representatives of the 53 member states that make up WHO Europe, as well as civil and partner organisations who work with the World Health Organisation.
Crown Princess Mary first spoke at the WHO Regional Committee for Europe’s meeting in September 2006, where she affirmed her commitment to issues surrounding public health.
“As patron for both a very complex organisation and an organisation that works within the extremely complicated area of public health, it has been important from our earliest discussions together to recognize where and how I can add value,” Mary said at the time.
“It is obvious, I cannot be an expert. But I can be knowledgeable and have a solid understanding of my focus areas. And I can contribute to generating greater awareness of these areas and public health issues in Europe generally.”
In 2017, Crown Princess Mary received the WHO Medal for her contributions to global health.
Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, said at the time that “It is a privilege to pay tribute to a member of the Danish Royal Family who has used her position and influence to shape public health and shine a light on issues that have been neglected.”
The out-going WHO Regional Director for Europe, Zsuzsanna Jakab, also praised Crown Princess Mary, saying that she has “on countless occasions advocated for maternal and child health, as well as for health promotion and disease prevention in areas including immunization and antimicrobial resistance. She brings to these challenging health issues her singular gift of explaining the critical and complex with a human touch, speaking to all, but valuing the individual.”
Crown Princess Mary’s speech will be broadcast live via a webcast and using the hashtag RC69CPH on social media.
