Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth delighted with £50 Tesco gift card

There were big winners on the first day of the Royal Windsor Horse Show, including Queen Elizabeth herself.

The monarch, who is in Windsor to take part in the major event of her 90th birthday celebrations, received a £50 voucher to Tesco, a British grocery company when her horse, Barber’s Shop, won the Tattersalls & RoR Thoroughbred Ridden Show Series Qualifier, in the National Hunt category.

Barber’s Shop was the last horse bred by the Queen Mother, and won eight races between 2006 and 2012, with prize money of over £143,000. The horse is now a show horse and is ridden by trainer Katie Jerram.

“We hope this win provides a little help with the weekly royal shop,” Tesco said after learning about the Queen’s win.

Tesco was not an event sponsor, but the company figures that an account holder bought the voucher to use as a prize in the event.

The Royal Family, per their public accounts, spends around £1.3 million on groceries a year.

The Queen’s prize also included £70 in cash and a voucher from the Retraining of Racehorses charity for a Kensington Ri-Dry jacket.

It’s a case of history repeating itself, as Barber’s Shop won the same event three years ago at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, and the Queen won a Tesco voucher for the prize.

Tesco does not hold a royal warrant, so it is unlikely that Her Majesty will use the voucher. In the past, she has distributed any winnings between her trainers, jockeys, and other members of the team.

The Queen will be in Windsor throughout the weekend, and will attend her 90th Birthday event on its last evening.

Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday Party celebrations this weekend will include 900 horses and more than 1,500 participants exploring her life, from birth, through war, to her marriage, coronation, and reign.

Stay tuned to Royal Central for coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s birthday celebrations all weekend, including live updates on the final night!
