The Sussexes

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex once they get married next year.

The Dukedom of Sussex is said to have been reserved for Prince Harry upon marriage, meaning he is likely to become HRH the Duke of Sussex and Meghan will become HRH the Duchess of Sussex.

It is very improbable that Meghan will be styled as ‘Princess Meghan’, although she would formally be Princess Henry by marriage.

Royal historian Marlene Koenig explains: “Most likely, Harry will be created a Duke. Sussex is available so Meghan would be HRH the Duchess of Sussex. Her rank would be a princess by marriage of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland.”

Other possible dukedoms Harry and Meghan could take on include the Duke and Duchess of Clarence or the Duke and Duchess of Hampshire.

Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan will almost certainly be a public wedding (quite possibly the last for The Queen’s grandchildren as Princess Beatrice, Eugenie and the Earl of Wessex’s children are unlikely to be afforded a public wedding).

However, the wedding will probably be similar to the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall’s in 2005 because Miss Markle is a Catholic divorcee.

It is unknown whether The Queen would attend the wedding. She famously stayed away from her son’s second marriage but attended a reception after the ceremony.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s title will not be announced until the day of the wedding.

As was the case in 2011 when Prince William and Kate Middleton became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the decision will fall to the discretion of The Queen.
