Speculation that Prince Harry, along with his brother and sister-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, will be upping their royal duties in 2017 is proving true as Prince Harry has just announced that he is now the Patron of Rhino Conservation Botswana (RCB).
In a video that was filmed while the prince was in Botswana, Harry said: “The rhino is one of Africa’s most iconic species.
“This is a black rhino, an animal that deserves the utmost respect, so to be able to be sitting next to her is incredibly special.
“The black rhino has been reintroduced into Botswana and its numbers are increasing here, while numbers are decreasing elsewhere.
“If we can’t save these animals, what can we save?”
Prince Harry has long been championing the cause to save the endangered rhinos, so a natural step was becoming Royal Patron. In the video that was posted on RCB’s YouTube page, Harry also commented on this new venture: “I’ve been lucky enough to visit Botswana for more than 20 years and am incredibly fortunate to be able to call it my second home.
“Being Patron of RCB is an opportunity to give something back to a country that has given so much to me.”
“It’s about time we start celebrating and supporting the countries that are taking the lead in conservation.”
RCB was founded in 2014 and is an international organisation that protects and monitors both white and black rhinos by relocating them from popular poaching spots in southern Africa and moving them to Botswana.
The government in Botswana has strict anti-poaching laws that is in part supported by the military.
Last September, Prince Harry spent time in Botswana, joining an RBC operation to track endangered black rhinos with electronic tracking devices. Part of his hands on duties including covering the rhino’s eyes to protect them while being fitted with the tracking device, monitoring the breathing and heart rate and cooling the rhinos with water.
