The Duke of Cambridge’s time as a Search and Rescue pilot in the RAF officially ended, it was reported today. The Duke, who today took part in engagements alongside brother Prince Harry commemorating the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, is yet to reveal his next move.
Prince William has been a search and rescue pilot for the last three years after deciding to take a secondment from the Blues & Royals. Because he wasn’t allowed to go on active service due to his position in line to the throne – the plan of taking a secondment to the RAF was a way of allowing the Duke to lead a relatively normal working life.
An announcement is yet to be made on what the Duke is planning to do next in terms of a career, though there are whispers that he is to take up some form of administrative position back in the Blues & Royals, where he holds the rank of Captain, like his brother.
The end of his time in the RAF also means an end to his time living in Anglesey. The Duke will be vacating his rented cottage on the island and moving back to Kensington Palace where he and his wife and son’s new apartments are also ready for them to move in to.
It is unlikely that the Duke would willingly give up his military career at this stage to pursue more royal engagements. It is always known that he prefers the normality that regular working life offers, though he does know one day he’ll need to step up to a full-time royal life.
