Danish Monarchy Joins Social Media

The Danish Monarchy has announced that they have joined two new social media platforms.   They will be on Facebook and Instagram, where the public can follow their activities, see preparations for big royal events, and get special insight into the history and collections of the Danish Royal House. Facebook and Instagram will join the already active YouTube page run by the monarchy. From the 31 May 2016 onwards, these two new accounts will be active. The announcement follows the recent update to the official website of the royal family: http://kongehuset.dk/en. The Danish Royal House stated that the Facebook and Instagram accounts can be found by searching “Det danske kongehus”, which is the name for the active YouTube page.

The Lord Chamberlin, Michael Ehrenreich, was quoted with the announcement from the Danish Royal House’s website as saying, “The media consumption of Danes is shifting, and the Royal Danish House wants to be where Danes are. With the new platforms, we have as a supplement to the other media coverage the opportunity to directly tell Danes about the Royal Danish House, the Royal Family’s work and the Royal Danish House’s role in the society to a greater extent. Here, we think that Facebook and Instagram are good platforms. We see it as a natural further development of the Royal Danish House’s media platforms that the Royal Danish House goes on the social media.”

An accompanying video was posted on the new Facebook site, as well. The video features Her Majesty Queen Margrethe with a short clip of the first radio address for New Year’s 1941 by King Christian X, Her Majesty’s grandfather. Further clips in the video feature the first live television broadcast of Margrethe’s proclamation in 1972, video from Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary’s balcony appearance after their wedding in 2004. The video ends with Crown Prince Frederick taking a photo of his mother on his iPhone to be posted on the new social media sites.

At the time of publication of this article, the official Facebook page had over 49,000 likes, and Instagram had close to 24,000 followers. You can follow their Facebook page here and Instagram here.
