The Jordanian Royal Family celebrated Jordan’s Independence Day yesterday. The entire family turned out with the exception of Princess Iman, who had returned to university before the event. Iman, 22, studies at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.
King Abdullah, Queen Rania, Crown Prince Hussein, Princess Salma, and Prince Hashem all attended the festivities for the 73rd Independence Day at the Cultural Palace in Amman.
The day began with the ceremony at the Cultural Palace where the King was welcomed with a 21-gun salute and reviewed the troops. Various members of the government then spoke about Jordanian achievements since it got its independence on 25 May 1946 and congratulated Jordanians on their accomplishments.
King Abdullah later presented medals to an array of Jordanians and leading national institutions. A video was also shown of the honourees and their achievements covering the 20 years of the King’s reign. According to the Royal Hashemite Court, the medals “are in appreciation for their contributions to Jordan’s prosperity and progress.”

The Order of Al Istiqlal (Independence) of the First Degree was bestowed on the World Islamic Sciences and Education University, and the Order of Al Istiqlal (Independence) of the First Degree was presented to the Jordan Academy of Arabic. Additionally, the Order of Al Istiqlal (Independence) of the First Degree was bestowed on the late Sultan Odwan and the Order of Al Istiqlal (Independence) of the First Degree was given to Mohammad Abu Ghazaleh. Several others were presented with various royal decorations during the ceremony, as well.
Also in attendance were military officers, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, representatives from Jordanian society and political parties, as well as diplomats.
His Majesty also took to social media to wish his fellow Jordanians a happy Independence Day, as did his wife and eldest son, Crown Prince Hussein. The latter remarked on Instagram, “Happy Independence Day to Our Jordan, which continues to stand strong with the will and determination of its proud people.”
