Prince Carl Philip of Sweden is engaged to marry his long-term girlfriend in Sweden in the summer of next year, the Swedish royal court announced. The 35-year-old prince, son of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, will marry Sofia Hellqvist – a former model.
Miss Hellqvist is a former model and has been dating Prince Carl Philip for over four years. She has become close with the Royal Family, attending the wedding of Princess Madeleine and Christopher O’Neill in 2013, and ringing in the New Year with the family on a Swiss Alps holiday. Sofia is 29-years-old.
The press conference was held at 5.30pm in the garden of the Royal Palace. An official statement by Prince Carl Philip stated “Sofia has said yes today to sharing the rest of her life with me.” Speaking to reporters, the prince added “I have the incredible honour of being engaged to this fantastic girl.”
The bride-to-be spoke of the prince, saying “Carl Philip is the most humble person I have ever met, which is what made me fall in the beginning.” She said the proposal was a surprise, and that she was amazed and shocked when she was expecting a “totally normal day” at work.
While the couple kept details on the proposal to themselves, they admitted that it took place at a mutually beloved location. Wearing a bright red dress, Miss Hellqvist displayed her new diamond engagement ring to the media.
Prince Carl Philip was born in 1979 as The Crown Prince and first in line to the Swedish throne, however an Act of Succession soon thereafter introduced absolute primogeniture, making his older sister Princess Victoria the new heir to the throne as the eldest child. He is now the third in line to the throne after Victoria and her daughter, Princess Estelle.
The official statement came from Sweden’s Marshal of the Realm – the equivalent of a private secretary to the King – who outlined the steps leading up the this moment, including consent from The King and approval from the Swedish Government.
