Princess Theodora of Greece is engaged

It’s another royal wedding alert!

The private office of His Majesty King Constantine of Greece announced today that the King and Queen Anne-Marie’s youngest daughter, Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, 35, is engaged to be married to Los Angeles based attorney, Mr Matthew Kumar.

Further details regarding the date and ceremony will be announced in due course.

It is not known if the couple will marry in the United States in California where they reside or if they will hold the ceremony in Greece like Theodora’s older brother, Prince Nikolaos did when he married Tatiana Blatnik (now Princess Tatiana) on 25 August 2010.

It is expected that the Danish and Spanish royal families will attend as they are the Princess’s aunts, uncles, and cousins. Queen Sofía of Spain is her paternal aunt, making the reigning King Felipe her first cousin, as well as his sisters Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina. Queen Margrethe of Denmark is her maternal aunt, and her two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim are also her first cousins.

The press release issued this morning stated in full:

“Their Majesties King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie are delighted to announce the engagement of their youngest daughter Theodora to Mr Matthew Kumar.

“Further details about the forthcoming wedding will be provided in due course.

“Mr Matthew Kumar, 34, was born and raised in Southern California to Sam and Lonnie Kumar. He is a practising attorney in Los Angeles.”

Two photos of the couple, who began dating in 2016, were released alongside the press release. They can be viewed here.

Princess Theodora posted on her Instagram, “Words can’t express our happiness and excitement. I can’t wait to marry this wonderful man. I love you, Matt.”

Prince Nikolaos commented on the post saying, “I’m so unbelievably happy for you and wish you both a life of eternal happiness.”

Kumar, who was admitted to the California bar in 2012, owns a law firm specialising in debt collection, according to royal expert, Marlene Koenig. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and his law degree from the University of La Verne, also in California.

Princess Theodora was born to the deposed King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece in London, where the family was residing in exile, on 9 June 1983. She has one older sister, Princess Alexia (b. 1965); two older brothers, Crown Prince Pavlos (b. 1967) and Prince Nikolaos (b. 1969); and one younger brother, Prince Philippos (b. 1986).

Theodora works as an actress in Los Angeles and acted in the long-running soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful from 2011-2016.

Princess Theodora is in line to the British throne, as she descends from Queen Victoria. Her Majesty The Queen is also her godmother.

Although no longer on the throne, the Greek Royal Family has retained their styles and titles as a courtesy.
