Prince Ernst August of Hanover ended up in a Peruvian hospital after his son, Prince Christian’s religious wedding ceremony to Peruvian lawyer and ex-model Alessandra de Osma on 16 March 2018 in Lima’s St Peter’s Church.
The 64-year-old Head of the House of Hanover reportedly fell ill and collapsed during the extended wedding celebrations on 17 March at Pedro de Osma Museum. For a time, it was reported that he was in critical condition and in a medically induced coma in intensive care.

What placed the royal in hospital has been debated. Some have reported it was due to alcohol consumption while others have said it was food poisoning. His attorney told RTL that Ernst August and other guests “suffered food poisoning, which is not unusual in South America.” However, the catering company has denied that their food was bad.
After being transported to the Clinica Delgado, Ernst August’s stepson, Pierre Casiraghi, the son of his wife, Monaco’s Princess Caroline, was by his side while the newlyweds were with their guests. Prince Christian did reportedly leave the reception for a time to check on his father.
It is not clear if His Royal Highness’s condition is still critical or if he is still in Lima’s Clinica Delgado.
The father of the groom has been hospitalised in the past. In 2005, he was admitted to hospital for acute pancreatitis in serious condition and later said his hospitalisation was attributed to his lifestyle and alcohol consumption.
The Prince made the trip to Peru for his younger son’s wedding after refusing to attend his older son, also named Prince Ernst August’s wedding last year as he did not approve of the union.
