A look at Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s engagement photos have shown off Eugenie’s engagement ring in all its glory.

The eight-in-line to the throne proudly wore the ring which features a padparadscha sapphire surrounded by a halo of diamonds.

The band is a yellow-gold colour with a further two diamonds on display towards the top.

A padparadscha sapphire is named after the Sinhalese word for ‘lotus blossom’, in relation to the diamond’s distinctive salmon colour. They are widely sought by collectors and are one of the rarest types of sapphires.

It’s not yet known who made the ring, although there is a striking resemblance between it and the engagement ring of Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson.

Back in 1986, Prince Andrew chose a vibrant ruby diamond to compliment Sarah’s red hair. The Burmese ruby, which was surrounded by yellow diamonds, was made by Garrard, a British jeweller who also made Diana’s ring.

At the time, Andrew spent £25,000 on Sarah’s ring according to Hello!. It has since tripled in value and is thought to be worth something in the region of £71,000.

The Duchess, who announced her daughter’s engagement alongside the Duke of York through a Buckingham Palace statement, tweeted “total joy” as the news was made public.

She tweeted: “A total embrace of goodness and joy.

“We love Jack and I am so excited to have a son, a brother and a best friend.

“Eugenie is one of the finest people I know and so together it will be pure harmony.”

In a separate tweet, she posted: “I always say that the river flows well to it’s destiny because of the guidance of a solid rock.”

Prince Andrew retweeted his former wife’s messages on his official account.

Eugenie and Jack will marry at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle following a seven-year relationship.
