On Easter Sunday, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a
service at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney. Similarly, The Royal
Family back in the UK attended a service at St George’s Chapel.
William and Catherine arrived to a large crowd waiting outside the
Cathedral; they have generally received great support wherever they
go. The couple joined locals for the service, who had to apply for
tickets to attend alongside the royals.
After the service, they signed the First Fleet Bible brought over
to Australia by English settlers in the late 18th century. The
precious book has also been signed by Her Majesty The Queen and
Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Diana, as well as Prince Andrew
and Sarah, who have all visited the Cathedral before.
The Duchess changed out of her grey Alexander McQueen coat into
a yellow ‘broderie anglaise’ dress for the Cambridge’s next
engagement at Taronga Zoo, where Prince George opened a bilby
enclosure. The whole family went to the zoo. Visitors had stopped
being admitted about an hour before the young family arrived, as
they had already reached capacity.
The Prince George of Cambridge Bilby Enclosure was opened by
William, Kate and young George, on this, the eight-month-old’s
second engagement of the tour, and of his life! Will helped feed
the animal, whilst Kate supported her son as he had a look in the
enclosure. He seemed enthralled by a bilby which was also
named after him – in recognition of his birth last year – and made
a grab for the small marsupial in its petting enclosure. However,
his parents didn’t think it was a good idea letting him get so
close to the animal, remarking he has ‘quite a grab’, and that he
‘wouldn’t let go’ if he did manage to get hold of it.
The Prince was presented with a small cuddly toy of the animal to
remember his experience by, and seemed happy with it until he was
given something better – what appeared to be a rear-window car sign
to chew.
The Duke and Duchess then toured the zoo further, while George
was looked after by his nanny. They saw giraffes, tree
kangaroos and a koala to name a few. The couple also had a giggle
when a bird of prey swooped low over the press pack at the bird of
prey display.
The family left the zoo and boarded a flight for Canberra, where
they will be based for the rest of the tour. Getting off the plane,
the whole family was greeted by local dignitaries.
