King Charles III

King Charles III says thoughts and prayers are with Canadians following storm Fiona

King Charles, while still Prince of Wales, at the State Opening of Parliament. His Majesty read The Queen's Speech on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II in May 2022, five months before his accession.

King Charles has sent a message to Atlantic Canadians following the devastation left by the post-tropical storm Fiona on 24-25 September.

The King’s message, sent to Canada’s Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, read: “My wife and I were most concerned to hear of the appalling devastation caused by storm Fiona and particularly wanted to send our profound sympathy to the people of Atlantic Canada whose lives, livelihoods and properties have been so badly affected by this disaster. We have fond memories of our recent visit to your beautiful region and know that your resilience and sense of community will help you through these unbelievably difficult times. We would also like to express our deep appreciation to the first responders, the military and to community members who are doing so much to support others during this extremely challenging period. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with all of you as you work to recover and rebuild.

“CHARLES R.”

The message was also relayed in French, Canada’s other official language, and comes as the Canadian Armed Forces have been called in to aid in clean-up in areas hard hit across Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland.

Many areas in the three provinces are still without power four days later. The now-King and Queen paid a visit to Newfoundland and Labrador in May for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The royal message was sent on letterhead from Balmoral Castle, where King Charles and Queen Camilla are spending the week before resuming royal duties on Monday. The couple returned to Scotland shortly after the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on 19 September.

On 3 October, the King and Queen will conduct a series of engagements in Dunfermline to celebrate the area’s city status and will host a reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
