How The Royal Family is honouring VJ Day: A guide to the commemorations

VE Day 80 procession and flypast in London

As the United Kingdom marks the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day this August 15, the Royal Family is playing a central role in the nationwide commemorations honouring the end of the Second World War in the Pacific and the sacrifices of Far East veterans.

Here is a comprehensive guide to the engagements and events involving members of the Royal Family.

His Majesty The King’s Message

On the morning of 15 August, The King will deliver a special audio message reflecting on the significance of VJ Day and paying tribute to the veterans and families affected by the conflict. The message is expected to set a tone of solemn remembrance and national unity.

National Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum

Later that day, The King and Queen will attend the Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Organised by the Royal British Legion in partnership with the government, this national service brings together veterans, families, and public representatives to honour those who served in the Far East theatre.

Following the service, Their Majesties will meet with Second World War veterans at a reception, providing a rare opportunity for personal interaction and recognition.

The Duchess of Edinburgh’s Visit to 105-year-old Veteran

Earlier in the week, The Duchess of Edinburgh, Patron of The Java Far East Prisoner of War Club 1942, will visit Mr James ‘Jim’ Wren, a 105-year-old Royal Marines veteran and former prisoner of war, at his care home in Salisbury. She will hear firsthand about his wartime experiences, including surviving the sinking of HMS Repulse and enduring captivity following the fall of Singapore.

On VJ Day itself, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will attend a service at the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle, organised by Royal British Legion Scotland.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester’s Commemorations in East England

Representing the Royal Family in Norfolk and Suffolk, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will attend the Far East Prisoners of War 80th Anniversary Service at Norwich Cathedral. They will then participate in a second service dedicated to the children and families of Far East POWs in Suffolk, recognising the wider impact of the conflict on loved ones left behind.

Autumn Reception at Windsor Castle

The series of commemorations will conclude later in the autumn with a Reception for veterans hosted by the Royal Family at Windsor Castle, allowing further recognition and celebration of the sacrifices made by veterans of the Far East campaign.

Further engagements may be added to the schedule in due course.
