The Queen tops Christmas Day TV ratings

The Queen’s Christmas Day Broadcast has once again topped off the TV ratings as nearly 7.5 million viewers tuned in to watch in just the UK alone.

The traditional speech was watched by 6.1m people on the BBC and 1.3m on ITV.

The figures however, are slightly down on last year when 7.8 million UK viewers tuned in to hear Her Majesty speak.

In second place on the Christmas Day ratings was the last ever episode of Downton Abbey, which drew in an audience of 6.9 million, with a 30% share of all viewers watching their televisions last night.

BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing finished in third place with 6.5 million people watching.

In this year’s broadcast, the 89 year old monarch spoke of the troubles that people have been subjected to over the past year and quoted a verse which she said gave hope.

The theme was ‘light overcoming darkness’ and she spoke of 2015 being the 70th anniversary since the end of the Second World War and her religious beliefs.
