The Sussexes

How did the royal wedding photographer get ten excited children to pose so beautifully?

Almost a week on from the royal wedding, it is still the hot topic of conversation on everyone’s lips.

One of the biggest questions leaving people across the world puzzled is how DO you get ten excitable children to sit still for one of the most memorable photographs of the year?

Well now, Alexi Lubomirski, the photographer who caught the wonderful snap of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with all their beautiful pageboys and bridesmaids, has revealed how he did it.

And as you might imagine, some very famous sweets were the answer to all his prayers.

As reported in Vogue, Alexi said: “I’ve been asked by everybody ‘How did you control the kids?’ and as we were setting up the big family shots and I was placing the Duke of Edinburgh and Her Majesty onto their chairs, I could hear the kids started crying in the background and there was some chaos.”

But with some quick thinking and successful sweet-talking, the tantrums and tears didn’t last for too long.

“As soon as the kids came onto the set, I immediately shouted out ‘Who like Smarties?’, and then everybody hands up, smiles, even some of the adults I think put their hands up.

“That was our magic word of the day, so thank you Smarties” Alexi continued.

So it looks like the classic ‘cheese’ might be out the window.

If Smarties (which are like M&M’s for readers who might not have come across them in their own country) are good enough to get the royal family smiling, they might just be the answer for everyone.

And the big family photos weren’t the only beautiful images that Alexi Lubomirski captured that day.

He was also responsible for the intimate photograph taken of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on Windsor Castle terrace and it would seem that Lubomirski couldn’t have been more honoured to have been trusted with the role.

“This has been a beautiful chapter in my career and life, that I will happily never forget,” he said.
