Canada’s Governor General: It would be “marvellous” if Prince Harry & Meghan Markle got married

The Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, has said that it would be “quite marvellous” if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married.

Speaking to ITV News, the outgoing Governor General said that the Prince’s romance with the actress is greatly strengthening ties between the United Kingdom and Canada.

Miss Markle was born in America, but Canada has become her adopted home and is where her television show, Suits, is filmed.

Yesterday at a bilateral meeting with the Governor General, Prince Harry said that Canada is “home away from home.”

In an interview with ITV News, Mr Johnston said: “I think it would be quite marvellous and I hope it would be quite marvellous for him and obviously it will help to bring us together.

“But, you know, that reflects so many of the people-to-people ties that are so strong. I think about 20% of our citizens would claim British heritage, so those ties are very strong.”

Miss Markle attended the Opening Ceremony of the Invictus Games in Toronto at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday evening.

The 36-year-old  was seated in the stands away from the Prince with her close friend Markus Anderson – the man who introduced the pair last year. It was widely thought that she would be absent from proceedings.

Meanwhile a few stands away, Prince Harry was sat beside First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, and Governor General Johnston. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie were in the row in front.

Mr Johnston, who has held the office since 2010, will leave the role of Governor General next week.

He will be replaced by former astronaut Julie Payette, who met The Queen at Balmoral last week.

Ms Payette will become the 29th person to hold the position of Governor General of Canada and will be the fourth female to be the monarch’s representative.
