Milestone Week for Duchess of Gloucester Begins with Royal Ascot Celebration

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester congratulated the connections of Great Barrier Reef after the colt stormed to victory in the Coventry Stakes on the opening day of Royal Ascot.

The presentation carried added significance for the Duchess of Gloucester, who celebrates her 80th birthday later this week. The royal couple met winning owner Coolmore, trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Wayne Lordan following the Group 2 contest.

Great Barrier Reef maintained his unbeaten record with an impressive performance to hand O’Brien a record-extending 12th victory in the prestigious juvenile race.

The son of No Nay Never arrived at Ascot with two wins from two starts, having followed up a debut success at the Curragh with victory in the Group 3 Marble Hill Stakes last month. Despite those credentials, he was sent off at 6-1, with stablemate Confucius preferred by punters after Ryan Moore chose to ride the 2-1 favourite.

Breaking smartly from stall three, Wayne Lordan tracked the pace on the far side before the field converged approaching the final two furlongs. Great Barrier Reef responded strongly when asked for his effort, quickening into the lead and finding enough in reserve to repel the late challenges of 40-1 outsider Adaay Of Scarlett and Royal Heritage.

Confucius, the market leader, could manage only sixth place.

The result underlined the quality of O’Brien’s juvenile team and continued his remarkable record in the Coventry Stakes, having also won the race with River Tiber in 2023 and Gstaad in 2025. For Lordan, it marked a first success in one of Royal Ascot’s most prestigious two-year-old contests.

After the race, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester joined the winning connections in celebrating another memorable Royal Ascot triumph for the Coolmore and Ballydoyle operation.
