Well wishers have gathered outside Sandringham House in Norfolk, hoping to catch a glimpse of The Queen on the day she marks the 70th anniversary of her reign.
Small crowds lined the route from the royal residence to the Church of St. Mary Magdalene where a service was due to take place on the morning of February 6th 2022. Some had brought flowers to present in case The Queen decided to worship at the church on the morning of Accession Day.
One placed a bouquet on the gates of Sandringham with a handwritten note saying their ”thoughts are with you” as The Queen remembered her father, who died on February 6th 1952, and her late husband, Prince Philip, who broke the news of her accession to her while they were in Kenya. This is the first year that The Queen will mark the anniversary of her accession without Philip at her side.
In the end, The Queen decided to stay inside Sandringham. She was photographed attending to her red boxes with a photo of her father, King George VI, at her side.
Earlier on her Jubilee weekend, Her Majesty welcomed members of local charities and the nearby Women’s Institute into Sandringham for a tea party marking the anniversary of her accession.
Elizabeth II became Queen on February 6th 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI. She is the first British Monarch to rule for 70 years. The main events for her Platinum Jubilee will take place in June 2022.
