The Queen tells Angela Merkel they are ‘making history as she bids auf wiedersehen to the German Chancellor at Windsor Castle

The Queen bid farewell to Angela Merkel on Friday afternoon during an audience at Windsor Castle.

In just a few weeks time, Mrs Merkel will step down as the Chancellor of Germany after almost 16 years in power.

Friday’s audience was the final opportunity The Queen had to host Mrs Merkel whilst she is in office.

As the two world leaders posed for pictures, The Queen told the Chancellor that they were ‘making history’.

For the last 16 years, Mrs Merkel has been the leader of Germany, meeting the British monarch on many occasions.

But as her time in high office comes to an end, the 66-year-old politician is spending her final few weeks visiting different countries on a valedictory tour.

Before heading to Windsor Castle, Mrs Merkel spent some time with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at his country residence, Chequers.

Earlier in June, Mrs Merkel and other world leaders met The Queen during the G7 Summit in Cornwall.

Her Majesty and senior members of her family travelled down to south west England for part of the meeting.

The 95-year-old monarch also separately hosted US President Joe Biden at Windsor Castle for afternoon tea.
