The Queen sends birthday wishes to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society

The Queen has this week paid tribute to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society as they celebrating their 180th anniversary. Founded in April 1841 by a group of chemists and druggists, the society works to support and represent pharmacists and the profession. Less than a year after it was founded, the Society was granted a Royal Charter of Incorporation by Queen Victoria.

In a note to the Society on behalf of its milestone anniversary, The Queen said:

I congratulate the members of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society on the occasion of its 180th anniversary.

Since 1841 the Society has led and supported the development of the pharmacy profession through the advancement of science, education and practice to ensure the sage and effective use of medicines.”

The Queen, who is patron, went on to add:

Today the Society continues to play a central role by providing information, professional standards, guidance, events and advocacy for its members.Huge progress has been made and pharmacists now work alongside other healthcare professionals, advising them on the use of medicines to ensure the highest standards of patient care as well as prescribing and dispensing medicine to patients.

As you mark this significant anniversary, I thank all those who serve the Society and also its members for their dedication to their patients and for their vital contribution to the health of the nation during the coronavirus pandemic.”

I wish you every success in the future.”

The letter dated April 15 was received during the national period of mourning following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh on April 9. Out of respect, the Society deferred celebrations past their 15 April founding date.
