Duchess of Cambridge takes on Queen’s tennis patronage

It has been a busy past few months for the Duchess of Cambridge as she has taken on another patronage that once belonged to another member of the Royal Family.

After 64 years as a loyal Patron, Queen Elizabeth II is said to be handing the baton of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club to the Duchess.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club hosts The Championships at Wimbledon and it is expected that The Queen will officially announce the change in roles during this summer’s event.

Turning 90 this year, Her Majesty and her husband, Prince Philip are reviewing their current patronages and passing them on to younger family members. In December, Kate took over as Patron of the RAF Air Cadets from The Duke of Edinburgh, a role which he held for 63 years.

A fan of tennis herself, the Duchess and her husband Prince William frequent the royal box to cheer on their favourites such as Britain’s Andy Murray during the quarter-final of Wimbledon’s 2015 games.

It is also reported that Kate’s brother-in-law, Prince Harry will be replacing Queen Elizabeth as Patron of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), the governing body of rugby in England and an area he has been contributing since 2010. The Queen has held this Patronage for 65 years.

Just because The Queen is cutting down on her workload does not mean she wishes to take anything away from these groups. Careful consideration is going into deciding what are the best steps to be taken for all concerned. There are currently 628 organisations and charities to which she is affiliated.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, a source said: “There have been discussions, but the Queen is mindful that she does not want organisations with which she is associated to think that when she turns 90, that’s it — it’s goodbye. That will not be the case at all.”
