Charles and Camilla “touched and honoured” by The Queen’s historic announcement

A Clarence house spokesman has said the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are “deeply touched” by comments made by The Queen on the eve of her Platinum Jubilee, in which she says Camilla should be known as Queen Consort when the time comes.

In an unexpected announcement to mark 70-years as monarch, The Queen wrote: “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me.

“And it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”

Debate over whether Camilla will be known as Queen Consort or Princess Consort has been ongoing ever since she married Prince Charles back in 2005.

Until Her Majesty’s statement on Saturday evening, the official position has always been that Camilla would be known as ‘Princess Consort’ when her husband becomes King.

However, as had been pointed out by many reputable royal and constitutional experts, this position would have been highly unorthodox and would have required legislation to be passed.

The Queen’s message to mark her Accession Day is one in which she highly praises her daughter-in-law for the important role she has played in The Royal Family and beyond.
