The Queen during a visit in Scotland Week 2021

This week is an important week in the royal calendar, as The Queen is in Scotland for Holyrood Week. Each year, The Queen spends a week in Scotland doing several engagements, meeting with communities and groups all over Scotland. While it does look slightly different this year without a garden party, The Queen along with the Duke of Cambridge and the Princess Royal are spending this week in Scotland. Her Majesty went to Stirling Castle yesterday for a personally important engagement.

The Queen visited Stirling Castle yesterday afternoon in her role as Patron of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regimental Association to reopen the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ Museum. Her father, the late King George VI, named the then-Princess Elizabeth as Colonel-in-Chief of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on her 21st birthday in 1947. She remained Colonel-in-Chief until 2006 when the regiment became part of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

It was a busy visit to the castle. The Queen was presented with the keys to Stirling Castle, and then moved on to visit several different exhibitions. These exhibitions included Birth of a Regiment and Our Scottish Roots, celebrating the regiment’s heritage. After touring, she unveiled a plaque to formally mark the reopening of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ Museum.

The Museum can be found in one of the oldest surviving structures at Stirling Castle and has been closed for three years to complete needed updates. It houses over 5,000 items and documents stretching back over the regiment’s 200+ year life, highlighting both the regiment’s history and its connections to different Scottish communities.

Typically, The Queen starts her holiday at Balmoral Castle after Holyrood Week finishes, but it is unclear whether she will go to Balmoral or return to Windsor Castle. The Princess Royal will be joining The Queen on Wednesday, 30 June, for the remainder of the week.
