The Princess Royal has been recognised with a prestigious honour during a visit to the West Yorkshire town of Huddersfield.

Her Royal Highness was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Huddersfield in recognition of her long-standing commitment to the arts, with a particular focus on fashion and textiles.

The presentation took place during the University’s graduation week, in a ceremony attended by over 100 graduating students and their families in the Oastler Building.

Delivering the oration, Professor Parik Goswami, the University’s Director of Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange, praised Princess Anne for her advocacy within the sector.

He said: “I personally witnessed Her Royal Highness’s heartfelt and considered speeches on some of the challenges and opportunities the industry faces at the UK Fashion and Textile Association’s Sustainability in Textiles events in the last two years.”

He also noted her involvement in the Textile Institute’s annual conference, hosted by the University in 2023, adding: “Her Royal Highness has an extraordinary passion for the fashion and textile sector and demonstrates a genuine interest in the intricate craftsmanship, technical skills and creativity that define the industry.”

Professor Goswami continued: “Her frequent visits are not only a testament to her commitment but also serve as a significant morale booster for those involved in the industry. The Princess Royal’s presence and encouragement have created a positive ripple effect, enhancing the visibility and prestige of UK fashion and textiles on a global stage.”

During her visit, Princess Anne also toured the University’s award-winning archive and exhibition space, Heritage Quay. She viewed the current exhibition, The Town That Taught Itself, marking two centuries of technical and professional education in Huddersfield.

Her Royal Highness was also shown student work from the BA Textiles and BA Costume with Textiles end-of-year showcases, featuring creations by Charlotte Holland, Ellie Raine, Liza Smeeton, Mandy Shepherd, and Talia Bechelet.

The visit highlighted Princess Anne’s continuing dedication to education, craftsmanship, and the creative industries in the UK.
