Prince William announces Earthshot is headed to Boston

The Duke of Cambridge made an announcement to share the location of the 2022 Earthshot Awards ceremony.

On their official Twitter account, the Duke shared a video outlining this year’s awards that will be taking place in Boston, Massachusetts. While there is no specific date yet, it will be held in early December and will be broadcast around the world. Five Earthshot Awards will be given out from the fifteen finalists chosen.

The Earthshot Prize will be working with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, who has prioritised climate change action from the beginning of her tenure, including signing an ordinance to divest all City of Boston funds from fossil fuels, private prison industries, and tobacco, as well as the John F Kennedy Library Foundation.

Wu shared her excitement at the Awards coming to Boston later this year:

“We are honoured and excited that Boston has been selected to host the 2022 Earthshot Awards. This is an opportunity to shine a global spotlight on our efforts to combat climate change and demonstrate that, together, we can meet the urgency this moment demands with innovative solutions that protect our planet and future generations.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge established the Earthshot Prize with the Royal Foundation, with the first prizes awarded in 2021. Anyone can submit a proposal to the awards, with the goal being to provide sustainable solutions to the Earth’s severe climate issues over the next decade, from 2021 to 2030.

Fifteen finalists are chosen from across the globe, and five winners are chosen to receive a £1,000,000 grant to continue their work, one from each category. The five categories are: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate.
