Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey join together for TV shows on mental health

The Duke of Sussex has been working on a new series of documentaries about mental health with Oprah Winfrey. The programmes, which focus on both mental illness and mental wellness, are due to air on Apple TV in 2020.

The collaboration was announced on the new Instagram account of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The post confirmed that Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey had been working on the series for several months and that the programmes, billed as a multi part documentary, would focus on getting viewers to ”have an honest conversation about the challenges each of us faces, and how to equip ourselves with the tools to not simply survive, but to thrive.”

The Duke of Sussex and Oprah Winfrey are co-creators and executive producers of the series.  In a short statement issued as part of the Instagram announcement, Prince Harry said: “I truly believe that good mental health – mental fitness – is the key to powerful leadership, productive communities and a purpose-driven self. It is a huge responsibility to get this right as we bring you the facts, the science and the awareness of a subject that is so relevant during these times”

Prince Harry continued ”Our hope is that this series will be positive, enlightening and inclusive – sharing global stories of unparalleled human spirit fighting back from the darkest places, and the opportunity for us to understand ourselves and those around us better. I am incredibly proud to be working alongside Oprah on this vital series.”

Oprah Winfrey, one of the biggest and most influential TV stars in the world, has spent many years talking about and campaigning on mental health issues while the Duke of Sussex’s commitment to the issue has been a major strand in his public and private work for many years.

The friendship between Oprah Winfrey and the Sussexes was underlined when she attended their wedding at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 19th 2018.
