Duchess of Kent’s son’s marriage split confirmed just days after his mother’s funeral

The Duke and Duchess of Kent’s son, Lord Nicholas Windsor, has confirmed he has separated from his wife.

The news came just days after he and his family said a final farewell to the Duchess at her funeral held at Westminster Cathedral.

Lord Nicholas, 55, was accompanied at the funeral by his three sons but not by his wife, Paola.

Now it’s been confirmed that the two have parted.

Nicholas married Paola in 2006 at a ceremony at thee Vatican City. It was the first public Catholic marriage of a member of the Royal Family in centuries.

The couple had first met at a party marking the end of the last Millennium in New York. Lord Nicholas converted to Catholicism in 2001 and the couple decided to marry within the Catholic faith.

They had a civil wedding in London on 19 October 2006 and their religious marriage, at the Church of St Stephen of the Abyssinians, took place on November 4 2006.

Nicholas and Paola have three sons – Albert (born in 2007), Leopold (born 2009) and Louis (born 2014).

Albert Windsor was the first member of the Royal Family to be baptised a Catholic since 1688.

The Daily Mail reported that Nicholas and Paola had been separated for some time but had no plans to divorce.

The split was revealed two days after the funeral of the Duchess of Kent, the first public Catholic funeral for a senior member of the Royal Family in centuries.

The Duchess of Kent died on September 4 2025 at the age of 92.
