<![CDATA[Last night, The Prince of Wales and Duchess of
Cornwall attended the A Night of Heroes: The Sun Military
Awards at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich,
London.
The evening gala recognises the work and dedication of our armed
forces, and will be broadcast on television next week.
Prince Charles and Camilla joined a whole host of politicians,
celebrities and sports people to honour our troops. The Prime
Minister, David Cameron, and the Leader of the Labour Party, Ed
Miliband, alongside footballer David Beckham and Simon Cowell were
among those in attendance.
During the gala, which was hosted by Phillip Schofield and
Amanda Holden, awards were given out to those who have
demonstrated outstanding contributions to the armed forces. Eight
awards were presented, which are often referred to as ‘Millies’.
The awards celebrate the work of those troops at home and abroad,
including those who have been positioned in Afghanistan.
Commenting on the importance of the awards, Amanda Holden said:
“The Millies is my opportunity to pay respect to the real-life
heroes of our armed forces who keep us all safe. It is a great
honour to present such a prestigious show for ITV1 and highlight
the amazing work which our servicemen and women do every single day
of the year.”
The event saw a number of other notable names in attendance,
including actors Damian Lewis, Liam Neeson, and Dame Maggie Smith.
Singers Katherine Jenkins and Alesha Dixon, swimming Olympian
Rebecca Adlington, and footballer Rio Ferdinand were also
present.
This was the seventh year of the gala, and each of the awards
were judged by a panel, including Andy McNab, Penny Lancaster,
Lorraine Kelly and Jeremy Clarkson.
Speaking about the judging process, Jeremy Clarkson stated: “Read
the ones that don’t win, you think, how can they not win something,
having done that…They’ve been doing some extraordinary things in
Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s an opportunity for people to say ‘thanks
very much’, and ‘have a few beers’, which they normally do.”
A Night of Heroes: The Sun Military Awards will be
broadcast on ITV at 8:30pm on Thursday 18th December.
