King Charles III marks first birthday as Monarch

King Charles celebrates his birthday today, his first since he took the throne.

His Majesty is 74 years old.

The day will be marked with gun salutes including one at Green Park which takes place at midday and one at Edinburgh Castle.

It is understood The King will mark the day privately.

It is not clear whether he will spend any part of his first birthday as Monarch at Buckingham Palace, the place of his birth.

Charles Philip Arthur George was born on November 14th 1948, the first child of the then Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. He was second in line to the throne at the time of his birth and was known as His Royal Highness Prince Charles of Edinburgh. His grandfather, King George VI, issued Letters Patent to ensure that his first grandson was an HRH.

The longest serving heir in British history, he became King on September 8th 2022 on the death of Queen Elizabeth II. He is the oldest person ever to succeed to the throne.
