Jubilee beacon proclamations herald ancient royal tradition

Town criers across the Commonwealth have announced the impending lighting of the Jubilee beacons.

The proclamation was read on the afternoon of June 2 2022 as celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee got under way.

Thousands declared the upcoming beacons using words specially written for the 70th anniversary of The Queen’s reign by Jane L. Smith, the Town Crier for Bognor Regis.

The proclamation stated that ”And so it is in honour of this unique occasion that beacons will be lit this evening throughout the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the UK Overseas Territories – and in all the Capital Cities of the Commonwealth.”

Pearly Kings and Queens across London also proclaimed the beacons at a special gathering at Trafalgar Square at 2pmm on June 2 2022.

The beacons themselves will be lit as soon as the Principal Beacon is illuminated on the Mall. The Queen and the Duke of Cambridge will perform a dual ceremony to bring the ”Tree of Trees’ to life with Her Majesty initiating the ceremony at Windsor Castle and Prince William continuing it in London. The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm.

Beacons have been lit to mark major royal events in Britain for centuries and The Queen has followed the traditions at all her past Jubilees.
