Edward and Sophie head to the Cayman Islands to deliver special letter from The King

The Earl and Countess of Wessex have travelled to the Cayman Islands on their latest globetrotting tour.

Their Royal Highnesses have been meeting locals from across the Cayman Islands, and delivered a letter on behalf of Prince Edward’s elder brother, The King.

In the letter, His Majesty recalls a trip he took to the islands a few years ago alongside Camilla when they were Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

“My wife and I recall with great fondness the warmth of our welcome to the Cayman Islands in 2019 and how inspiring it was to see at first-hand the remarkable development of the Territory over the past few decades.

“Caymanians are rightly proud of their culture and heritage, their modern and dynamic community, together with their determination to protect their environment and grow their economy sustainably.

The letter went on to add: “The Cayman Islands, like all of our Overseas Territories, are much-loved and integral members of the British Family and I look forward to strengthening yet further our relationship in the years ahead.”

The Cayman Islands is a British overseas territory, though it is not a realm. Therefore, it is legally considered a part of the United Kingdom. The Island has its own government and makes its own laws. But the UK is responsible for its foreign affairs and protection.

Martyn Roper, the Governor of the Cayman Islands welcomed the Wessexes in a social media post, saying they are delighted to welcome Their Royal Highnesses and it is an opportunity to cement the strong links with the UK and the Royal Family, as well as showcasing what the islands have to offer.

On the visit, the Countess attended a 100WF (Women in Finance) education event and breakfast at The Ritz. The Countess, who is one of Women in Finance’s Global Ambassadors formally opened the 54th Cayman Islands Agricultural Show. The event had not taken place for a number of years due to the forced pause on social gatherings. The Countess also joined her husband at Government House for a special reception featuring people from throughout the Cayman Islands community.

The Earl and Countess have been joined on the tour by their Private Secretary, Captain Andrew Aspden, and Anabelle Galletley, who is their Assistant Private Secretary.
