Prince William takes to Twitter to congratulate Team England on their win

After England won against Colombia in a penalty shootout, Prince William took to Twitter to join in the pride being shared across the nation.

The Duke of Cambridge, also president of the Football Association, tweeted from Kensington Palace’s twitter account in a rare move.

He wrote: “I couldn’t be prouder of England – a victory in a penalty shootout! You have well and truly earned your place in the final eight of the #worldcup and you should know the whole country is right behind you for Saturday! Come on England! W.”

England broke the curse of the penalty shootout, winning 4-3 against Colombia. In the past England has lost the World Cups in 1990, 1998 and 2006 and the European Championships in 1996, 2004 and 2012, granting them the worst shootout record in the world of football.

On the duke’s recent trip to Jordan, he joked that anyone telling him the score of the game would suffer “pain of death”.

Prince William was joined by media on the plane to Jordan while the England-Panama game was taking place. When asked if he wanted to hear the score, he said: “On pain of death, please don’t tell me the score.”

He later sat down with Crown Prince Hussein and watched the England football match after successfully avoiding hearing the score throughout the day. He watched the rerun at Beit Al Urdun Palace.

Before Team England left for Russia to take place in the World Cup, Prince William spent time with Harry Kane and the rest of the team wishing them well.

While there the Duke of Cambridge took time to personally praise Danny Rose for recently going public about his battle with depression. He said to the England and Tottenham player: “I think it’s really, really good what you did…well done. You should be really pleased. Loads of support from me on that.”
