The third-in-line to the throne is wearing a blue and white striped shirt as he smiles into the camera lens.

The photograph was taken by award winning royal photographer, Chris Jackson, who is married to the Duchess of Cambridge’s assistant, Natasha Archer.

He tweeted this evening: “I’m honoured that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen to release this portrait I took to celebrate Prince George’s 4th Birthday.”

Speaking after the photoshoot, Mr Jackson told tales of the young Prince’s antics: “He is such a happy little boy and certainly injects some fun into a photoshoot, even getting behind my camera at one point to give a helping hand.”

Kensington Palace tweeted: “TRH are very pleased to share this lovely picture, and would like to thank everyone for all of the kind messages they have received.”
