Why Sweden’s newest royal baby is a princess but not an HRH

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden have welcomed their fourth child, a daughter, and there is one royal style the new baby won’t share with her parents.

While their daughter will be a princess, she will not share the title of “Her Royal Highness” with her parents. And it’s all because of a royal ruling from her grandfather, the King of Sweden.

In 2019, King Carl XVI Gustaf announced that he was limiting which of his grandchildren could be an HRH. Until that point, all the children of all his children had automatically taken that style. However, from 2019, only the children of the heir to the throne, Crown Princess Victoria’s children would keep it. That meant Princess Estelle (second in line for the throne) and Prince Oscar remained “Her/His Royal Highness” but that Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine’s children would no longer have the style of “Her/His Royal Highness”.

The King’s grandchildren have received duchies and titles that they will keep without the HRH styling. So Sweden’s newest royal baby will take the title of princess and will also become duchess of a Swedish county but she won’t be HRH.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia welcomed their new daughter on February 7 2025. They already have three sons. Prince Alexander was born in 2016 and Prince Gabriel was born in 2017. Their youngest son, Prince Julian, was born in 2021 and the first of King Carl Gustaf’s grandchildren to be born without the HRH style.

Princess Sofia gave birth to a healthy baby girl at Danderyd Hospital. The baby is 49cm long and weighed 3645 grams at birth. The family has not shared the newborn princess’s name yet.
