The tiara worn by a groundbreaking ruler to abdicate her throne

Queen Margrethe of Denmark made history in January 2024 when she was the first Danish monarch to abdicate in almost 900 years. At her last New Year’s Levee, she wore one of her favourite historic tiaras.

Queen Margrethe chose the Pearl Poiré Tiara for her last New Year’s Levee. This diamond and pearl tiara has eighteen large pear-shaped pearls hanging from diamond arches with floral designs and a thin diamond band below.

This tiara was originally given to Princess Louise of Prussia in 1825 when she married Prince Frederick of the Netherlands, along with a coordinating pearl and diamond brooch.

Princess Louise’s daughter, also named Princess Louise, married Crown Prince Charles of Sweden in 1849 and would become Queen Louise of Sweden. She inherited the tiara and brooch upon her mother’s death in 1870.

Queen Louise’s daughter, Princess Louisa, then inherited the tiara upon her death. Louisa married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and the tiara has been in the Danish Royal Family since.

Several Danish queens have added to the Pearl Poiré Parure, with a pearl and diamond necklace, earrings, and cluster brooch added to the original tiara and brooch.

Queen Margrethe wore the Pearl Poiré Tiara for her January 1972 accession portrait, so it was a fitting choice for her last New Year’s Levee as Queen of Denmark.
