The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh cheer on Paralympics GB on record breaking day in Paris

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were in Paris for another historic day for Paralympics GB.

Britain’s star athletes took their medal tally for Paris 2024 to 100 on September 6th 2024, with Edward and Sophie watching some spectacular shows of sport.

The couple were at the Palace of Versailles for the para equestrian events where they chatted to Queen Silvia of Sweden along with Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Estelle.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been patron of Paralympics GB since 2003. In that time, para-athletes have become some of Britain’s biggest sports stars and claimed yet another record on September 6th when they won their 300th gold medal since National Lottery funding began in the early 2000s.

Prince Edward arrived in Paris with the Duchess of Edinburgh earlier in the week to show support for athletes who have had a hugely successful Games.

Among the many highlights was a 19th gold medal for Dame Sarah Storey whose Paralympics career began in 1992. In her three decades as a champion, Dame Sarah has claimed medals in swimming and cycling.

Dame Sarah Storey is also one of the most vocal advocates for further support for para-athletes whose achievements have transformed Britain’s sporting scene. Britain is the birthplace of the Paralympic movement.

As more golds rained down, Paralympics GB also revealed that three out of four disabled children in Britain say they don’t get to take part in regular school sport and PE. It’s calling for more government support to ensure that all children have access by the time of the next Paralympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
