The big talking point of Queen Letizia’s week – an argument with a cake

Queen Letizia found herself involved in an unexpected debate this week and it involved a mysterious spat around a cake.

To be fair, Spain’s queen seemed to be enjoying her encounter with the three tier spectacular. It had been placed in the centre of her table at a gala awards ceremony she was attending in Barcelona alongside King Felipe to celebrate literature.

The event marked the 75th anniversary of the Planet publishing group and during the evening, the royals presented the prestigious Planet Prize to Paloma Sanchez-Garnica for her novel, Victoria.

King Felipe also gave a speech underlining the importance of reading, in which he told guests that ”reading is essential to educate free citizens. Encouraging it is the best present we can give to future generations because we are never alone if we have a good book at our side.”

King Felipe was seen nudging Queen Letizia as she tried to cut a cake

However, his wife’s attentions soon turned to cake. The famously healthy living Queen of Spain seemed mesmerised by a triple tiered confection, baked to mark the special anniversary.

As guests continued to chat, she grabbed a knife and leant forward to cut it before King Felipe spotted her and tapped her arm then held her back. Another guest on her other side also appeared to ask her to stop. Queen Letizia was seen joking about it moments later.

The glittering gala, at the National Museum of Art in Barcelona, came during a busy time for the King and Queen of Spain. They had just overseen the country’s National Day celebrations in Madrid while, in just a few days time, they will be in Oviedo with their elder daughter, Leonor, for the Princess of Asturias Awards.
