Queen Sofia of Spain taken to hospital with infection

Queen Sofia of Spain is being treated in hospital for an infection.

The queen, who is 85, was admitted to a clinic in Madrid on the night of April 9th 2024 after developing a urinary tract infection.

The Spanish Royal Household said Queen Sofia is already making a swift recovery from the illness but will remain in hospital for observation for the time being.

She is being treated at the Ruber International Clinic in Madrid.

A scheduled visit, to see the work of a food bank in Huesca on April 12th, has been cancelled.

The mother of King Felipe VI recently returned to Madrid after her annual Easter break in Mallorca.

Queen Sofia has always enjoyed good health and has maintained an active schedule of engagements in recent years.

King Felipe carried out engagements as news of his mother’s illness was revealed, holding a military audience at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

It’s not yet know whether the king or his sisters, Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina, have visited their mother. Their father, King Juan Carlos, was recently in Madrid but his permanent home is in Abu Dhabi where he retreated in self imposed exile in 2020.
