The Prince of Wales has taken centre stage at the start of a historic State Visit, welcoming the Sultan of Oman to Britain on behalf of the King in a significant display of his growing role at the heart of the monarchy.

Prince William greeted Sultan Haitham bin Tarik at his residence before accompanying the visiting head of state to Windsor, where the formal ceremonies of the State Visit are taking place.

The visit highlights the enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and Oman, with longstanding military, economic and diplomatic ties forming a central part of the two countries’ partnership.

Oman occupies a strategically important position on the Arabian Peninsula, close to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international shipping route. The Sultanate has also established itself as an important diplomatic intermediary in the Middle East, making the strengthening of bilateral relations particularly significant amid continuing regional tensions.

Following William’s initial greeting, the King and Queen formally welcomed the Sultan at a ceremonial reception in Windsor, accompanied by military honours and a Royal Salute.

The Prince and Princess of Wales joined the King and Queen for a traditional carriage procession through Windsor, with the royal party travelling to Windsor Castle.

At Windsor Castle, the Sultan inspected a Guard of Honour alongside the King, whilst military bands performed the British and Omani national anthems.

The day’s programme will also include a private lunch hosted by members of the Royal Family and a specially curated exhibition in the Green Drawing Room, showcasing historic Omani items from the Royal Collection.

The visit will conclude its first day with a State Banquet at Windsor Castle, where the King and Sultan are expected to deliver addresses celebrating the relationship between their countries.
