Luxembourg’s Grand Duke announces abdication in Christmas speech

The Grand Duke of Luxembourg has confirmed he will abdicate as he made his Christmas address.

In an emotional speech to his people on Christmas Eve, Grand Duke Henri announced he will give up his throne on October 3rd 2025.

He will be succeeded by his eldest son, Guillaume.

The Grand Duke had previously said he had every intention of stepping aside and had even chosen the date but would only reveal that when the moment was right.

At this festive season, he felt the time had come to share his decision with the people of Luxembourg.

Cour Grand Ducale still/ fair use

The Grand Duke said ”today, the Grand Duchess and I are pleased to share with you that Prince Guillaume and Princess Stephanie will succeed us on October 3rd 2025.”

Grand Duke Henri’s reign will end just a few days short of the 25th anniversary of his own accession.

Earlier this year, the Grand Duke named his heir as Representative Lieutenant of Luxembourg, meaning Guillaume now exercises most of constitutional powers.

On his accession, the new Grand Duke will assume all the powers. His heir will be his elder son, Prince Charles, who will be five years old and the youngest first in line in Europe.
