King Charles all smiles during first Buckingham Palace Garden Party of the year

Back to royal duties, Charles was all smiles alongside Queen Camilla as they hosted the first Garden Party of the season at Buckingham Palace.

Long standing tradition

Thousands of guests were welcomed for the event which has been a longstanding tradition since the 1860s. The parties were first created as a way for the monarch to recognise community members for their public service.

Their Majesties joined the Princess Royal, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to greet many of the invited guests.

The first party of the season was in honour of the United Kingdom’s creative industries. More than 4,000 people who work in art, film, radio, TV, or fashion were got to take part in the festivities.

Thousands of slices of cake

Traditionally there are three parties a season with two being at Buckingham Palace and the other happening at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland. During these parties alone, more than 30,000 guests are entertained. But what’s a party without food? Guests are treated to tea and cake. The royal website has previously said about 20,000 pieces of cake are eaten with 27,000 cups of tea served.

While it’s not uncommon for British weather to not cooperate, it’s not uncommon for a royal to be seen carrying an umbrella, or brolly. Male attendees traditionally wear morning dress or lounge suits while women pair their day dresses with hats or fascinators.

Guest misses out

It wasn’t all fun and games, though. One very important guest had to miss the event. Tony and Paula Hudgell posted on X saying they couldn’t make it to the party because they were stuck in traffic for two hours. But it’s possible they might still get to visit the Palace after all after the official Royal Family account responded to the post.

The next party is set to be held later this month at Buckingham Palace. The last one is scheduled for 2 July at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the monarch.
