The Aga Khan dies at the age of 88

The Aga Khan, spiritual leader and philanthropist, has died in Portugal at the age of 88.

Prince Karim Al-Hussaini was the 49th Aga Khan and imam of Nizari Isma’ilis.

He succeeded his grandfather to the title in 1957 at just the age of 20.

An announcement on his successor as Aga Khan will be announced in the coming days.

In a statement, the Aga Khan Development Network said: “His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family. 

“Prince Karim Aga Khan was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network. The announcement of his designated successor will follow.”
