An unusual name for Europe’s newest royal baby and she’s also now a duchess

The name of the newest royal baby in Europe has been revealed – and it’s a rather unusual pick.

The baby daughter of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden has been called Ines.

Her full name is Ines Marie Lilian Silvia. She will be known as Princess Ines of Sweden.

Her grandfather, King Carl XVI Gustaf, revealed what his latest grandchild had been called in a special meeting at the Royal Palace

He also announced she will become Duchess of Vasterbotten. The King of Sweden has given all his grandchildren honorary duchies at the time of their births.

However, following a decision by the king made in 2019, Ines won’t be an HRH. King Carl Gustaf ruled that only his children and the children of his heir, Crown Princess Victoria, would have that style. His other grandchildren, including Ines, are princes or princesses but not HRH.

Princess Ines was born on February 7 2025 at Danderyd Hospital. She is the fourth child and first daughter of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia and a little sister for Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel and Prince Julien.

While her first name is unusual in royal circles, her middle names all have a special significance in her family. Marie is the name of her maternal grandmother and Silvia is the name of her paternal grandmother. Lilian was the name of Prince Carl Philip’s great aunt to whom he and his family were very close.
