Security alert at Buckingham Palace following serious incident

Buckingham Palace and surrounding areas were on lockdown earlier this evening following reports of a serious police incident.

A man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) and assault on police after being caught in possession of a knife.

The man, believed to be aged in his early twenties, stopped his car near a police vehicle near Buckingham Palace at approximately 20:35hrs on Friday evening.

Police officers spotted a large knife in his vehicle and proceeded to arrest him.

During the arrest, two police officers suffered minor injuries to the arms. Both officers were taken to hospital for treatment.

There are no other reported injuries, and police remain on scene as enquiries continue.

The suspect has been admitted to a London hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He will then be taken to a police station for questioning.

Detective Superintendent Guy Collings said: “A man in his mid-twenties has been arrested by police after they spotted a weapon inside his car. The quick and brave actions of both officers meant that the suspect was detained very quickly.

“No members of the public had any interaction with this individual at the scene. He will now be questioned by detectives in police custody. It is too early in this investigation to speculate any further.”

The Queen was not in residence at the time and is currently at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
