<![CDATA[Princess Srirasmi, the wife of Thailand's Crown Prince, has relinquished her Royal title sparking a downfall which means that she is no longer in line to become the country's next Queen. The exact reason for Princess Srirasmi's decision is unknown though last month it emerged that several of her family members were detained in a high-profile corruption scandal which could have led to the relinquishment of title.
The decision by the Princess went public late on Friday December
12th after the wife of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn had asked for
permission to give up her Royal status. King Bhumibol Adulyadej
approved the request and the palace statement which appeared in the
Royal Gazette read: “Princess Srirasmi, wife of Crown Prince Maha
Vajiralongkorn… has written to respectfully resign from her
status in the Royal Family and permission has been granted by His
Majesty The King.”
Princess Srirasmi is the third wife of the Crown Prince,
marrying back in 2001, the couple have one son together.
Though the Crown Prince was already known to be estranged from the
Princess, the former Royal couple continued to attend official
functions together. Although as of yet there has been no official
announcement of divorce, it is inevitable that the couple will
separate.
To the surprise of many, this isn’t the first time that a wife of
the Crown Prince has been brought down in such a public way. His
second wife Yuvadhida Polpraserth was also discredited and
consequently forced in to exile eighteen years ago.
King Bhumibol of Thailand is the worlds longest reigning monarch, a
widely revered and a unifying figure, the King has been on the
throne in Thailand since 1946.
