King Charles is among just three royals in the world who can travel internationally without a passport.
The King is joined by Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, who benefit from special arrangements allowing them to travel overseas without the documents required by ordinary travellers.

While passports are essential for most people crossing international borders, the three royals occupy unusual positions that exempt them from the normal requirements.
Why doesn’t King Charles need a passport?
The King does not require a British passport when travelling overseas because British passports are issued in his name.
According to the Royal Family’s official website, the Sovereign does not need to possess a document issued in his own name.
British passports contain a formal request from the Secretary of State, made in the name of the King, asking foreign authorities to allow the bearer to travel freely and provide assistance and protection where necessary.
As the person in whose name the documents are issued, the King does not need one himself.
The arrangement also applied to Queen Elizabeth II throughout her 70-year reign.
However, the exemption is exclusive to the Sovereign. Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and other members of the Royal Family must carry passports when travelling abroad.
Japan’s Emperor and Empress
Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako also travel internationally without passports.
Their exemption follows a separate arrangement established in Japan, where the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reportedly determined in 1971 that issuing passports to the Emperor and Empress would be inappropriate.
The practice has continued under the current Imperial couple, who succeeded to their respective positions following Emperor Naruhito’s accession to the throne in May 2019.
Their position reflects the unique status of Japan’s Imperial Family and the diplomatic arrangements surrounding official overseas visits.
Can they travel anywhere in the world?
Although the three royals do not require passports, this does not necessarily mean they can enter every country without restrictions.
Individual countries retain their own immigration laws and entry requirements, and travelling without a passport does not automatically guarantee admission to every destination.
The claim that the three can travel anywhere without a passport therefore requires some qualification.
Nevertheless, the King’s exemption is officially confirmed by the Royal Family, making his travel arrangements very different from those of most international travellers.
For the rest of us, a valid passport remains one of the most important documents to pack before heading overseas.
