On January 14th 2022, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark reached her Jubilee. The Danish monarch marked fifty years of rule, a true Jubilee according to the original definition, but a Golden celebration in modern terms. However, the ongoing pandemic meant that plans for a party had to be put on hold. Instead, Margrethe was seen amidst the symbols of Denmark and her monarchy and made a moving visit to the grave of her father, King Frederik IX, on the anniversary of his death. Festivities would continue throughout the year but this rather solemn Jubilee was majestic in its own right.

Coming of age for a future queen

She will one day rule Europe and she’s the first princess to sit, undisputed, as a direct heir to Norway’s throne and on January 21st 2022, she came of age. Princess Ingrid Alexandra marked this big birthday with visits to her country’s parliament and a series of portraits, including one with a backdrop of the colours of the Norwegian flag. Gala celebrations would follow, once pandemic restrictions lifted, but the confident appearance of this queen in waiting at her initial birthday festivities won plenty of attention.
