The Queen adds another milestone to her historic reign

Queen Elizabeth II

Elizabeth II has reigned for 25,000 days, another milestone in a reign already filled with history

The Queen took the throne on February 6th 1952. Since then she has become the longest reigning Monarch in British history as well as the longest lived Monarch that the country has ever known. She reached the 25,000th day of her reign on July 18th 2020.

This new milestone also puts another historic note in the stories of her husband and her eldest son. The Duke of Edinburgh has been consort for 25,000 days while their first born, the Prince of Wales, has been heir for the same length of time.

The Queen shows little interest in marking these milestones. When her reign overtook that of Queen Victoria in September 2015, she said simply that the title of longest reigning monarch was ”not one to which I have ever aspired”, adding ”inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones, my own is no exception. But I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness.”

Elizabeth II now has the fourth longest verified reign in history. The longest verified rule is that of King Louis XIV of France who held his country’s throne for 72 years and 110 days, a milestone the Queen is set to pass in 2024.
